Jon Stewart Takes On Fox News' Selective Outrage

As some of you may know, during last Monday's episode of 'Dancing with the Stars', Nancy Grace had a "wardrobe malfunction".  Her right breast was hanging out of her dress, on live television, for the better part of a minute.

Immediately, word of the nipple slip spread like wildfire.  Every media outlet in the nation was reporting on the celebrity judge's embarrassing moment.  Even Fox News weighed in on the controversy.  Now, you would think that a woman's bare breast, shown repeatedly on national television would spark outrage by the pundits at Fox.  After all 'Dancing with the Stars' is supposedly a program that is going to be seen by "many children".  It airs at 7PM on Monday and Tuesday nights, on a network owned by the Disney corporation.

Not exactly.  The story received all of a ten second mention.  It was more along the lines of, "Supposedly this happened last night.  I wasn't watching the show, so I can't tell you if it did or not."  It was mentioned that Chaz Bono was dealing with a painful knee injury.  To segue into the next segment, one of the anchors mocked Bono by saying, "That's one part of Chaz that hasn't been operated on."

Just When 'Glee' Goes Fat Positive...

...They screw it up.  If you watched Tuesday night's episode of 'Glee', then you got to know Lauren Zizes better.  She kicks ass!  She's confident.  She's on the wrestling team.  She dresses cool, and she doesn't just jump into a relationship with someone.  She expects to be treated like a lady.  She wants to be wooed.

I'm watching the show, and I'm thinking, "This is great.  They're going to do a fat positive thing.  It's going to be awesome to see a positive fat teenage female character on television.  Maybe she'll be able to do what Kurt did for gay kids in America".  She's playing hard to get with Puck.  Puck's crushing hard on this girl.  Then Puck sings Queen's 'Fat Bottomed Girls':



She was insulted.  I know that if I sang that for my wife, she would be on me like white on rice.  At that point, the show, and the Lauren's character went downhill.  Number one, throughout the episode, Puck is continually telling her things like, "I usually don't go for girls like you", or "You're not my type".  The worst backhanded compliment of them all was something along the lines of, "You have to realize that I'm not into you because of what you look like, but because you're a cool person.  Like me."  I found that more of an insult than a compliment.  I think she's cute.

Secondly, and perhaps worst of all, the way they have her character written, she's always being tempted and wooed with food.  One of the jokes last night was she gave Puck his box of chocolates back because they sucked.  The box was empty.  When he asked why, she said "because I had to make sure every one of them sucked".  For fuck's sake, when he asked her out on Valentine's Day, he got down on one knee and proposed with a Ring Pop.  Really?  Food jokes for the fat chick?   I thought this show was better than that.

I've been fat all of my life.  I still am.  Even though I am over 6' 4" tall, I still weigh over 300 lbs.  Over the years, I have been able to accept the fact that I am fat and appreciate my body.  It wasn't until well into adulthood when that happened.  I am 35 now, and there are still times I look in the mirror and think, "My god, man.  Look at yourself.  You're so fat and ugly.  How could anyone ever find you attractive?"  Anyone reading this can tell you, life as a fat kid can be hell.  Personally, I was picked on and beat up more because I was fat, than because of my religion or my sexuality.

Overweight teenagers, especially teenage females, need someone on TV to look up to.  Someone empowered.  Someone confident about herself.  Someone fat positive.  Ryan Murphy, stop making fat jokes. You wouldn't subject Kurt or Blaine to gay jokes.  Don't humiliate Lauren either.  Young women need someone to look up to.  You introduced Kurt Hummel to America as a role model for our generation.  Give us Lauren Zizes.

I usually talk about anti-gay bullying on this blog, but this video is a sobering reminder of the thousands of teens that are bullied every day for other reasons. I was bullied and beat up more for being overweight than what I ever was for my sexuality or religion. Kids can be so cruel.

As a kid, you could say I had the trifecta of reasons to be picked on.  I was fat, usually 6 inches taller and 60-70 pounds heavier than the other kids in my class.  I was a Jehovah's Witness, and I was different than the other straight boys.  I wasn't into sports.  I was into music and fashion.  When everyone else was in auto mechanics class, I was trying to get into cosmetology classes.

I wasn't sure about my sexual orientation until I was in my 20s.  In my teens, I thought I was straight.  Unfortunately, I cannot count how many times I was called "fag" or "faggot" by other kids in school.  I was beat up on a regular basis.  I was tormented.  It was if I was tortured.

For years, I contemplated suicide on a daily basis.  I thought it was the only way I could escape what I was going through.  That was 20 years ago.  Things got better.  I'm still here.  Sadly, I had friends that aren't with us any longer.  The harassment was just too much for them to take.

Things are just as bad for todays LGBT youth as they were when I was younger.  Kids can be mean, heartless and cruel.  Teachers turn a blind eye to what happens inside and outside their classroom.  Kids are dieing at an alarming rate.

Something has to change.  This must stop now.  The Human Rights Campaign has a petition being sent to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, demanding that all schools include gender identity and sexual orientation as part of their anti-bullying programs.  The current situation is unacceptable.  Please go to the link and sign this petition.  You can also get information on how to write an editorial letter to your local paper.

Father Of Disabled Teen Threatens Bullies

Found this on Boing Boing today.  A man in Florida was arrested after boarding a school bus and threatening the kids that were bullying his disabled daughter.  The boys had put open condoms on her head and smacked her repeatedly.  The fuckers got off easy.

What I can't believe about this clip is how upset the boys' parents are.  If it was my kid that was tormenting a girl with Cerebral Palsy, I would have told him that he got what he deserved.  Then, I would have beat the shit out of him. Somehow, the parent defending his kid is painted as the bad guy, and not the teenage boys that had been regularly assaulting a girl with a disability.  I don't get it.
