Immigrants' DREAM Smashed By Senate

The gay community isn't the only demographic to feel slighted today.  Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants lost their path to citizenship with the Republican led filibuster.  So much attention has been focused on the repeal of DADT, that hardly anything has been said about the DREAM Act.

The DREAM Act is a provision that allows as many as 64,000 graduating high school students a conditional path to citizenship, provided they continue their education and get a college degree or complete two years of service in the armed forces.  The young men and women affected by the DREAM Act want nothing but to legally be what they've been raised to be, Americans.  Most of them have been in this country since they were little kids.

The DREAM Act was one of three amendments attached to today's defense spending bill.  Since debate on the bill was shot down in the Senate, it will likely be next year before this amendment is taken up again.
